I’m currently 23 years old and earn 50,000 GBP per year. This is a gross income of ￡4166 per month.
So why did the universe decide to pay me this sum?
Let’s start at the beginning…
I started working when I was 16 because I was really stubborn and and liked beautiful things. I hated asking my parents for money so I got a part-time job on the weekends to pay for my teenage extravagancies.

My very first job was pivotal in shaping my perspective towards the acquisition of wealth.
It was in luxury jewellery sales. My base pay was 6.75￡ per hour, 16 hours a week (Saturday and Sunday) but after a few months of working there I became so in-tune with human behaviour that I regularly received monthly bonuses from hitting targets. I made around 500–700￡ per month, whilst still being at school. I bought my first Prada bag at 16, just because I had the cash lying around and not enough sense to invest in Bitcoin (late bloomer, please forgive and forget!)
My second job wasn’t paid at all.
I made the leap from working as a resource to creating a resource, by setting up a Bristol University version of Her Campus magazine. Although this wasn’t paid, it was like starting up a business, and forced me to explore and use qualities which had previously remained dormant. Like writing, and hustling.

Content + Digital Marketing intern, 700 EUR/Month
This was one of the best learning curves of my career thus far. The agency I worked for was really smart when it came to using your time and determining its worth.
When I left, I was no longer scared of my words, nor did I doubt my ability to wield them. Beyond this, I had a true sense of how much my time was worth, even if I wasn’t being paid that much whilst being an intern.
Copywriter and freelancer, 50–100 EUR/hour
Upon leaving I promptly negotiated for the same agency to pay me as a freelancer to continue working for them. I then doubled this to 50 EUR/hour (bear in mind that I was still at university, where many fellow students were being paid 12GBP per hour for bartending jobs).
I then started freelancing for clients who would pay me 100EUR per hour for my expertise (somehow, I had actually acquired enough of this that my insights were useful to them. Thank you, universe!) I still do this, but much more on a consultancy basis to help businesses improve their social media + content strategies.

Information Technology sales
I leveraged all the experience I had already acquired whilst at university (this included being a tutor, setting up HC Bristol, setting up my own website, working for a small ethical startup, commanding decent wage as a freelancer, being a sales rep for Molton Brown, etc etc) to get an entry level sales job in IT, at 37,000 EUR per year. This was based in Cork, Ireland. I had considered jobs in the UK but wanted to go abroad first.
This salary later progressed to 50,000 EUR over the next year,.
I then decided I wanted to move back to the UK, and got a job where 50,000 was my full salary
Do I feel happy with it?
Yes, but not because of the actual money I’m earning.
The reason I feel happy about it is because I’m 23, and all the crazy and ridiculous things I did over the last four years have taught me huge amounts about the currency of the universe (which is trust, by the way) and how to leverage your way in and out of things.
While at university, I spent so little time studying that sometimes I would skip lectures and go to fashion events in London, which I was paid to attend and write about. There were some lectures and seminars I had never attended during my final year…
I then went on to get a 2:1 degree, which was the same degree that many of my contemporaries got whilst swotting in the library.
So yes, it feels satisfying to get what you worked for, and beyond that to understand that this is just the beginning.
In the words of Tom Lehrer, ‘Life is like a sewer, you get out of it what you put into it’.

I made 8,896$ last year. I work as house maid, take care of an elderly and also grow vegetables in Taiwan. I work every single day, and only allowed to take day-off only one day per month, and it’s only about 15 hours at day time!!
Are you happy with your salary? Yes, I’m happy with my salary, because working as it in Taiwan is paid well more than in Indonesia. In Indonesia, the salary of being a house maid we usually get is just about 1,543$/year. I get more and I can save more here in Taiwan.

Why would you like having this job? The reason is, I come from developing country, non-educated-well person and my family couldn’t afford my degree. Having loan from University is not available in Indonesia, except we take loan ourselves from the Bank itself. I’ve tried to get underprivileged scholarship but I didn’t have an opportunity to get one. So I decide to work for living.
At age 18 after graduated I was jobless for 4 months, then work at manufacture in another city in Indonesia, it’s Honda motorcycle wire-harness but the salary is under the minimum wage! I only make 1,843$/year with 9 hours work time 5 days. Live alone, rent small room & toilet, couldn’t eat well to save more money.
I’ve worked there for 15 months and out.I’ve tried to enroll a course to get a manufacture job in Japan, but they’ve rejected me because my high is too short. The requirement is minimum having 158cm height but mine is just 155cm and also I wear glasses which is big NO NO for them, they are not allow candidates to wear lenses either.Is there anything you can do? Don’t you have any skill? You know, thing happens and I’ve changed myself just for surviving, learn the lesson, and grow from it.

所以自從我18歲畢業(yè)了以后，我就失業(yè)了4個(gè)月，最后我在印度尼西亞的另一個(gè)城市里找了一份機(jī)械制造的工作，它是本田摩托車生產(chǎn)線，但薪水低于最低工資！我每周工作5天，每天工作9個(gè)小時(shí)，一年只能掙到1843美元。我自己一個(gè)住，所以我租了一個(gè)小房子，里面只有一個(gè)小房間和一個(gè)廁所，我為了省錢每天都吃不飽。

I used to make vector when I was school and I was into painting since High School, but back then my ability wasn’t being appreciated well. I realized, and it made me become someone else who only seek an opportunity to get a job and get money.At least now I can help myself, my lovely Mum, younger sister & family, right?It’s been 3 years working in here. Beside working every single day, I also advancing my English & Chinese myself. B1 in English and HSK 3 in Chinese. My current HSK level I’ve been studying is HSK 4, just 350 Hanzi left to go.
Since the beginning of this year, I’ve been thinking to pursue my degree and passion. My personality now is more into Analytics. Need to save money for months to get laptop to take online course then. Wish me luck!

Mind blowing! 1.2k upvotes! Thanks for your support guys. I appreciate you a lot!! I just want to add some upxe since I wasn’t aware about telling you that I am Indonesian living in Taiwan. The minimum annual wage salary here is 10,117$[1], and yes my paycheck is under the minimum wage while I work since I wake up and before I go to sleep again. I have never had an opportunity to take a long holiday to see my parents in Indonesia in this last 3 years. However my contract will last until September this year.
I’ve bought a tablet Samsung S6 Lite on June last year and I have been having some courses on edX (tech), Coursera (Spanish, Chinese, English, Marketing). Udemy (English, Spanish, German), Youtube (HSK Chinese, IELTS). Duolingo (been off because I couldn’t pass Diamond League), Khan Academy(Math), Memrise (Chinese, Spanish, Polish, German, Japanese),And then another apps for IELTS & HSK. Less sometime I study Cambridge Pure Math textbook. I handwrite Chinese on my tablet for 3 lesson of 3 Hanzi minimum in a day.
They are definitely a lot and I maintain my spare time to study three or four of them in a day but sometime I only take two. And I still communicate to my family, close friends and PenPals friends.
I will try to save money until June to buy a Lenovo Legion 5i. I’m excited!!

I pay an average of 90 Eur/Month to my Blocks administration ( Water, Gas, Elevator, Electricity and cleaning in the building ) I pay 40 euros for Electricity
I don’t pay more than 200 Eur/month for the gas as I mostly work from home and so does my partner I usually make my bookings in January and 50% Advance payment so that i can really afford everything in my vacation I go out to cool restaurants and spend approx 60 80 Euros for 2 people, maybe once a week ( maybe less ) I go out with my guys for beer but we always go to cheap students places as they have good food and cheap beer
