‘In prison or the DFAC?’: soldiers complain about base food

Times look tough for the U.S. Army if a photo of the breakfast served at one of the dining facilities to a soldier with the 299th Brigade Support Battalion is any indication.

“I guess 299BSB is broke as hell, and we still went to NTC,” wrote user u/willsugmar, who shared a picture of a meager biscuit, sad scrambled eggs, and a pathetic puddle of gravy.

Many commenters likened the meal to prison food.

“In prison or the DFAC?” asked user diopsideINcalcite. “Because DFAC can get rough when you’re fighting over French toast. Dudes get shanked routinely.”

Complaints about the food at installation dining halls across the Defense Department are not new. And military officials don’t track the effectiveness of their ability to feed service members, according to a report by the Government Accountability Office.

The Defense Department withholds money from troops’ pay to provide on-post meals, three times a day. The quality of those meals, however, have left a bad taste in service members’ mouths.

“After many broken promises the system is still largely the same, with evidence showing that service members on meal cards are eating less than half the meals they are entitled to and for which they are charged,” Rep. Tim Ryan, D-Ohio, said in a statement to Military Times.

As for the dismal breakfast, “Convicts in Federal prison eat better then that,” wrote user Florida_man727.

In 20 years of eating in USAF chow halls, no real complaints about the food other than it can get monotonous after a while. So I ate off base fairly regularly.
Air Force food was a step up from Army food. We used to go to Pope AFB (in the early 80's) to eat...until they wouldn't let us. Most of the time, I spent most of my meager $600/month eating off base too. But I don't recall ever being served a meal in any mess-hall like the one in the picture above.
I agree. We were stationed at Goodfellow AFB after many years of Army posts. I decided to eat in the Air Force dining facility with some fellow Army NCOs. The sextion was amazing. After we were done eating, we sat there looking for the tray drop off. We were very startled when some personnel saw that we were done, came to our table, and took our trays! We were stunned, but apparently this is SOP. The Air Force takes care of their personnel far better. When they built new barracks, or dorms, on the base for their enlisted, our soldiers received their old dorms. The sad thing is, their old dorms were still far better than the barracks that our soldiers were living in!
I've had the opportunity to serve in the military and work at a federal prison. Let me tell you that prisoners eat way better than this. We should take better care of our troops if this is in fact the honest truth of what's going on in the dining facilities.

This is what happens when you turn Mess Halls over to civilian contractors. When it was run by Mess Sergeants there was plenty of food. Officer's don't care they have the "CLUB"'
It’s a racket to move funding from the defense budget into contractor and lobbyists/politicians pockets.
They don’t even try to hide it.
Not mess hall, field kitchen. And where is the black half rotten mushy banana?
Field Kitchens are still manned by the same people that prepare, cook and serve and sometimes clean at a garrison 'mess hall'. In my opinion, as a retired Army SFC and last 14 years as the Platoon Sergeant of the support people like the Mess, Commo, Supply and for me, 63E40 maintenance, the cook profession is the hardest support service ALL THE TIME, in garrison or in the field! I'm not going to contradict the substance of the story.when that's what was offered for breakfast in 'the field'! Or I'd go hungry! :0) And going hungry is worse than eating what's in that photo! :)
In 32 years of Army active duty service in the U.S., Europe, Central/ South America, Pacific, and Asia. I have never had the DFAC on a military base serve food that looked like that and that also includes Navy and Airforce bases that we used during training. Not even in the field/deployments when we had K-Rations, C-Rations, and the MRE did our food look like that. I would bet that the Soldier picked what he wanted off of a larger menu and took this picture.
And I agree with your response. My experience with the food service (at least in the Army) is that it was decent and plentiful. Most of the complaints I had and heard were about NOT being fed at all
yep, US Army Retired here had food on a Navy ship out at sea spent 2 weeks out moving US Army equipment spent 6 mo with the USMC special assignment their mess hall food was good never when hungry had hot food in the field and had K-rats, C-rats, "lerps (that's all food you have to add water) " and MRE,
that picture shows are only the food he asks to get i guess he refused the bacon and pancakes and oatmeal
Army serves shit like this , this is why I bounced.
We had some lows in a few mess halls when I served in the Army (72-76). They were always taken care of fairly quickly when us troops would complain.
Have them eat MRE's for a couple weeks straight. They will appreciate the biscuit, gravy & eggs more.
We need to save our money for Ukraine. So they should just be grateful, right?
I served in the U.S. Navy and I've been to prison, foods about the same.
Most of our servicemembers are overweight, and that is an official fact from DoD. They would do well to lay off some of the usually good food.
Military food is great. And my current niece and nephew say they eat like a king
In my 4 years as a Marine in the 80s the mess hall food was not great but edible. Now when I got to visit both a Naval and an Air Force base there chow was so much better. Also there bennies for education etc, sleeping facilities...everything was better. The budget between the forces is not even close at all. So quit your whining and man up.
I thought of this after reading some of the comments. I've been retired from the Navy for 7 years. I'm an Ironworker now and we had a job at the Great Lakes base. I couldn't wait to go to the galley for a big Navy breakfast every day.
