The five U.S. Marines aboard a helicopter that went missing on a trip from Nevada to California were confirmed dead on Thursday.
First responders found the crashed CH-53E Super Stallion helicopter following hours of searching on Wednesday, but they did not find the crew until Thursday morning.
"It is with a heavy heart and profound sadness that I share the loss of five outstanding Marines from the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing and the "Flying Tigers" while conducting a training flight last night," Maj. Gen. Borgschulte, Commanding General for the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, said in a statement.
"These pilots and crew members were serving a calling greater than self and were proud to do so. We will forever be grateful for their call to duty and selfless service," he added. "To the families of our fallen Marines, we send our deepest condolences and commit to ensuring your support and care during this incredibly difficult time."
The U.S. military does not reveal the identities of deceased service members until at least 24 hours after all next-of-kin notifications have been made.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre confirmed Wednesday that President Biden had been briefed on the situation, and Biden released a statement after the Marines' deaths were confirmed.
"Jill and I are heartbroken at the loss of five U.S. Marines, whose aircraft crashed while flying from Nevada to California during a routine training mission. As the Department of Defense continues to assess what occurred, we extend our deepest condolences to their families, their squadron, and the U.S. Marine Corps as we grieve the loss of five of our nation’s finest warriors," Biden said in a statement.
"I am deeply grateful to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, the U.S. Air Force Auxiliary-Civil Air Patrol, and other federal, state, and local agencies for their professionalism and dedication in supporting search and recovery efforts. Our service members represent the very best of our nation, and these five Marines were no exception. Today, as we mourn this profound loss, we honor their selfless service and ultimate sacrifice—and reaffirm the sacred obligation we bear to all those who wear the uniform and their families," he continued.

The CH-53E Super Stallion helicopter had departed Creech Air Force Base in Nevada en route to Marine Corps Air Station Miramar near San Diego Tuesday night.
Local first responders were first contacted regarding the incident early Wednesday morning. The San Diego Sheriff's Office attempted to send a helicopter to begin the search immediately, but the aircraft was called off due to the "atmospheric river" storm hitting the area.
The incident comes roughly two months after a U.S. Air Force Osprey crashed off the coast of Japan in December. All eight crew members aboard the craft were killed in the incident.

As a mom of a Marine - my heart goes out to the families of these fallen Marines. May they be comforted. The details will come out soon enough why they were allowed to fly and who is responsible. But for now, five military lives were lost and they deserve all the honor for stepping up to take the oath to serve and protect.

I was asking the exact same question. The entire nation knew there was a major storm in California that had already killed people. As a retired Army helicopter pilot I am scratching my head wondering what the weather brief looked like before they took off.
Dusty0215994
I’m a current military IP and am wondering the same thing. I’d love to know what their weather brief said and then did the weather progress as forecast or get worse? Betting it was a VFR flight plan, and these guys were trying to maintain VMC. I’ve flown from San Diego to Fallon NV a few times. Great in VMC….real tough in the goo.

I didn't do much flying in the west, only a few flights to NTC. But I am going to go out on a limb here and say those are some tall mountains they were attempting to fly over. Not the smartest thing to do when the entire nation was hearing how bad this storm was going to be in California.

Same here. Former Army helo. It sounds like they were trying to maintain VFR around the mountains in that weather. Plain crazy for a military flight.

The crash was not in an Osprey. There’s nothing wrong with 30 year old airfrx as the avionics and critical parts are upxed all the time. The B-52 bombers have been flying since the 1950’s.

And my condemnation to the unit commander that requested/authorized this mission in extremely bad weather. There is a time & place where a unit commander must declare, "THIS MISSION IS NOT SURVIVABLE". And unless the goal of the mission is worth it, the mission should be scrubbed.
subotai1241
Ok, what no one is talking about is why they were flying - on an extended journey - in such bad weather.
Nothing in peace time [here at least] is so important as to put so many lives at risk as well as a multi million dollar aircraft by flying in an "atmospheric river".
As a retired Marine officer who has conducted investigations, the person who authrized this flight needs to have a career ending come to Jesus meeting with his or her commanding general - if not charged under the Uniform Code of Military Justice for negligence and neglect of duty.

Agreed. Something is odd with this. The picture they had of the helicopter looked like there was not much damage. It does not seem like there was enough damage to kill all 5. Also if they were killed in the crash, why did they have to spend a day looking for them? Dead people don't walk away from a crash.

im a former Marine officer. you are right on the money. over the past decade there has been more than one helo crash caused by weather that killed service members. Im talking peace time training, not combat missions. I also do not understand why the pilots are taking unnecessary risk and flying into known bad weather. you make only one mistake on flights like these, and its your last and final mistake. its shameful. If they are out and run into bad weather, why not set down ? I dont understand it. keep speaking truth and Semper Fi.

There sure have been a lot of accidents lately. My son is active Marine and makes me sick at the equipment they get. Where is all the money going? The Osprey is a death trap and most of the choppers are 30 years old.

Reminds me of Vietnam. We had old overused helicopters with minimal maintenance. All of our services should have the best equipment possible. We spend huge sums of money on illegals. We need to spend it on our men and women in uniform. This is on the heads of our politicians of both parties.

Sorry but we need to give all the money for equipment to the Ukraine and Israel so there is nothing left for our troops. Maybe we can get some of that new equipment back that we left in Afghanistan?

I’m sure that this particular post will get a lot of responses. Being an ex naval aviator the commanding officer needs to be pretty flexible when it comes to the responsibility he places in his charges. One thing good about the Navy and the Marines is that you are given a tremendous amount of responsibility at a young age! The pilot in command of this aircraft certainly had the option, at all times, to choose an alternate instead of continuing onto his destination if this was a weather related accident. I’m not sure what the weather was at the time of the accident so I cannot comment on the Pilots decision to continue to his destination. Also because the accident board has not come up with a cause this could’ve been Maintenance related. I know the weather in the San Diego area was not good at the time of the accident but was there some other factor involved? God bless these young men for wanting to serve our country and they did pay the ultimate price for that service. I pray for the grieving families, and for the souls of their loved ones, may God give you all peace.
Clif520
When democrats are in charge it seems our military suffers more losses due to maintenance issues than when republicans are in charge. Just like when Carter was president during the Iran mission and several choppers crashed or wouldn’t function properly during the mission. Just another good reason why we need republicans in charge of our country.

Actually, Marines are in the U.S. Marine Corps, not the U.S. Navy. I get it; both the Navy and Marine Corps fall under the Department of the Navy, but they are separate branches, each with their own chief/commandant.
Also, don't forget the U.S. Space Force; they have Guardians.

I have one question.
Why was a helicopter cleared to fly during severe weather conditions??
What "training" were they learning in that act? Militaries cancel missions and cancel flights due to inclement weather and this has been a practice since mankind began warring. Early on we would not war in the winter months at all. As we progressed we still had limitations. We would not fly bombing missions through cloud cover. It is doubtful unless a mission is of the utmost importance you would risk flying helicopters in severe weather even to this day with all our modern technologies; so again- why were they flying?
keyzersoze
Excellent question. I will not denigrate these Marines for serving our country and dying as a result of this accident.
Most of us understand that the DEI insanity has metastasized into the military and the results will always be lower mission readiness and poor decision making.

Because they were instrument rated pilots flying an all-weather aircraft. Naval aviators spend a lot of time training to fly in inclement weather. My favorite is flying in and out IMC on NVGs. Talk about getting the leans. But through training you develop the skills to work through it.
Yes, there are limitations. At this point it is impossible to say what the conditions were that cause the crash it exactly what happened. That will all come out when the investigations are completed.
至于getting the leans。

So yesterday the report was that they found the helicopter without saying if it crashed or just landed and they were still searching for the 5 crew members as if they walked off and they were trying to find them. If the aircraft crashed its pretty easy to determine that they were all onboard. Why put out a report that they were still searching for the crew members as if they walked away? I have never seen an aircraft accident reported in this way....EVER.
emblematic
It would not be easy to positively determine that they were all onboard. This is a very large helicopter and it would take considerable time to sort through the wreckage and burnt/melted pieces to not only identify and recover any remains but also positively identify whose remains they are, all while documenting everything for evidence in the investigation. You could presume all five were on board, but nothing can be definitely stated until it has been confirmed.
birkco
If the weather was so bad the search mission had to be called off, why were they conducting a training exercise in these same conditions. Why fly in these conditions unless it's absolutely necessary.

Yesterday it was reported that the wreckage was found - but not any remains, which was odd enough in and of itself, especially that they would have been strapped into their seats in the cabin. Unless of course, they were all attempting to jump out before crashing. It'll be interesting to see if any details are released.

Excellent question. I will not denigrate these Marines for serving our country and dying as a result of this accident.
Most of us understand that the DEI insanity has metastasized into the military and the results will always be lower mission readiness and poor decision making.
【DEI policies Also known as a diversity, equity and inclusion (DE&I) policy也被稱為多元化、公平和包容(DE&I)政策】
If the weather was so bad the search mission had to be called off, why were they conducting a training exercise in these same conditions. Why fly in these conditions unless it's absolutely necessary.
Sadden to hear that more of my fellow service members have died in this accident. A thorough independent investigation needs to take place to find the cause. I have my suspicions. May God Bless the families and our service members.

RIP to my brother Marines; its a constant reminder of risks and dangers even in training. In the Navy, we sailors also had deaths and injuries in the '70s; need to keep diligent and prepare to minimize or erase these accidents.

Yesterday it was reported that the wreckage was found - but not any remains, which was odd enough in and of itself, especially that they would have been strapped into their seats in the cabin. Unless of course, they were all attempting to jump out before crashing. It'll be interesting to see if any details are released.
Too many HELO incidents as of late...something is amiss!
Meanwhile, God Bless their souls and console their families...and thank you for your service to the USA
