Battery packs will follow a similar drop to flat screen TVs. I can remember when a 42" 720p TV was $10,000 and everyone said they would never be affordable. I just saw a 43" 4K on sale today for $149.00. And I can tell you that making flat screen panels is 1000 times more difficult than making a battery. Imagine trying to get yield where every pixel is good at that size panel. I still don't know how they did it and can sell one for that price.

BYD are starting to be seen, their cars are good value and over the next couple of years I think they will get name recognition, after that it their will likely to be a flood of cars. Battery prices will keep coming down as development ramps up. If they can reach 50% of the market in China that will be huge, as not only will it be a boost for EV production it will be a major hit for the legacy auto makers who for the most part can neither make EVs in quantity or at a profit. When their production goes down it will mean their manufacturing costs will go up. It will be interesting to see what happens over the next 3 years.

The market in China is huge, not only for EV's, also for any other products, the competition is fierce inside China, whoever survived will crash the competitors anywhere in the world. The mobile phone, cars, OS is the next, airplane C919 just flying in Singapore airshow already got over 1000 orders in China alone.

Based on what I've seen in the last few months in the UK I have no reason to doubt what the BYD Chairman is predicting.
Your point about the drop in battery pack prices is very important and I also have no doubt battery costs will drop further as the technology develops and matures.
I'm certain the official partnership with CATL will bear fruit. Both company's will work extremely hard to bring down the cost of battery packs as well as improve pack performance. Employing the very best engineers leaving University each year is clearly part of this strategy and will pay off big time in the long run.
All of this will mean that BYD, (and other Chinese EV manufacturers), will have the option of either improving their profit margins, or lowering the purchase price of their EV's to increase global market share. If I was working at a legacy motor manufacturer I'd be seriously concerned about my future.
As for what the mainstream media knows about EV's ....... very little. And their understanding of the subject is even less!

We have switched all our ICE for BEV, one TM3 and one BYD. Both great vehicles, much much nicer ride than ICE. We trip all over the place and have no problems at all.
Personally I cant see why you would stick with ICE when you can get motoring for just 20% of the running cost. I guess some just like burning through cash.

BYD is “right on” with its access to large numbers of professional engineers across all fields. It’s one reason why Chinese EV companies are so advanced with the integration of their electronics, computer tech, and software development compared to most Western manufacturers where the tech and supporting software is a weakness.
China graduates more post-grad scientists, engineers, and students across ALL STEM fields than ALL of the G7 countries combined.
The reason is simple. Over the years the Chinese government made huge investments in education at all levels, including vocational, in order to accelerate their countries social and economic development.

Thank you for the report. It seems EV batteries need both price reduction and energy density increase on an order of magnitude to wean them of subsidies and really disrupt the automobile market. Also the EV safety record needs to improve in a big way.

As an EV owner I get the Chinese market dynamics. But its completely different story in UK/Europe. EV’s much promised lower prices need to actually arrive on the forecourt and we are a long way off from that still. EV’s need to be significantly cheaper given the crappy charging infrastructure.

As NEV market will be occupying 50% in China this year, as an accountant my assessment is the cost will be constantly reduced because of economy of scale. There is a very good chance that in the near future, we can see EV price will beat the ICE vehicle even outside China, as opposed to western media's projection.

Japan was not known for quality stuff even in the 1970s. Often coined as cheap Japanese junk. About 1980 that started to all change really fast with Honda and Toyota and then just in a decade, Japan was known for quality stuff in cars and electronics. We think of China as 'cheap Chinese junk', but with BYD, this could be the start of massively changing the reputation for all of China if their stuff is quality, and if they are selling 10M cars a year already, then they must be doing something right. This could mean a massive shift not only in EV perception, but in China quality, and be an incredible boon for China, in general, all starting with BYD and the like. In American, the only company that can even think about competing in this space is Tesla, and even if Tesla is #2, knowing how Tesla innovates, that will still make Tesla massive on the world stage, because they do so much more than EVs

I just arrived back from a skiing holiday in Austria. We go to the same place every year and below the lifts are about 400 cars parked. I was amazed this year to see so many EV's and Tesla's in particular. Just one VW ID4, a few BMW Ev's but no Chinese yet. I remember when VW brought out the ID Buzz a few years back and I was expecting those to be sold like hot cakes. Where are they? Tasla's have completely dominated the market and now BYD will as well. Bye bye VW.

My job has me travelling extensively across Asia and EV’s are taking off in places (Indonesia for example ) where I didn’t think they would. You’re spot on Viking, the horse has bolted as far as the EV’s v ICE vehicles. Now everyone needs to catch up. The pace of change in China is incredible and everything I’ve seen first hand is consistent with what you report.

EV's have the potential to be made much more cheaply than ICE cars. The key is standardization. Your cell phone and network is made possible by standardization. You can buy a cheap basic cell phone for under 50 dollars.
The Chinese EV market will probably consolidate in the future, too many manufactures. The Chinese Central Planners may force manufacturers to specialize in one component, the one they make that is the best one in the market. Making that part the standard. All Auto manufactures will be encouraged to use that part. For example, one manufacturer for all the small EV Electric motors.
That will allow a brand to build cars in Mexico with standard Chinese parts and have US Batteries, support. Sell them in the US and do what the Japanese did in the 1970 and 1980's.
