I think that what we admire the most in British people is how polite and well behaved they are compared to us.
Taking the bus or the underground is an horrific experience in France, people push people, everyone tries to hold its place, it’s massive, moving, disorganised.
While British people form a line, a well behaved crowd.
Even if we are proud of our revolution we do enjoy the British royalty, it’s a never ending source of entertainment for us. We also love to be scandalised by how much the monarchy cost, while the sum of our living presidents rents costs us more than the Queen does.
We love that they hate us but enjoy so much our country! Holidays, food and wine, you can’t lie. Yup France ain’t so bad.
I think that more than anything they are our perfect rivals, we both have tried to outbest the other for more than a thousand years. In some way i think we feel really bound to them, more than any other country, and at the same time because of this deeply rooted competition we can’t seem to embrace the idea that we love each other.
Yup we love to hate each other. But we can’t seem to stop this love/hate relationship, can we?
Personally, i love how British people allow intimacy, personal space, and how politely they will disagree with you. I also love that they don’t feel like they need to speak loudly, to put on a show, and that they behave.
A company which I worked at had some French students on an internship for a few months. One of them said that what she liked about British people is how we can laugh at ourselves. As I said to her, we do have a lot to laugh at. That statement proved her point!
That there is the English Channel between us.
The 20th century was odd in that Britain and Germany have always had more in common with each other; especially going to war against the Fench !
Mind you though in WWII the Royal Navy did sink the French Fleet and the RAF regularly bombed France on the off chance that they may hit some Germans.
No wonder De Gaulle got so upsetnwith the British

The French call the English Rosbifs because they say Roast Beef is the only thing we can cook. Ironically it was the French who introduced the practice of spit roasting meat to Britain which absolutely revolutionised English cooking in the Middle Ages.
The Scots and French have The Auld Alliance which basically amounts to a mutual dislike of the English going right back to the Middle Ages.

Practically nothing. Sad but true.,in history we have had wars after wars, killing each other since the 11 century. Now we just dont slike them. They are snotty, cold and unfriendly. Snobs. Hypocrites. They think that French people are inferior . Not true. It makes them feel, better.
Yeah, we take the piss out of the French all the time. But they're our odd cousins. We won't let anyone else do that to them.
As an American who has traveled extensively in France and am very aware of France’s contribution to the US war for independence, I am constantly finding myself defending France against idiotic statements by Americans, most of whom hold no passport and have never been out of the country except to Canada or Mexico.
I am glad to hear of the similar defense of France by Brits who a moment ago were taking the piss out of the French!
As an older American who has spent much of his life visiting France, learning French, and living in France, I am aware of some Yanks’ tendency to talk trash about France, but I can honestly say that I don’t hear much negative about France here in California. A lot of us appreciate the mode de vie, the language, the food, the fierce defense of the rights of the people, and that they were our closest ally in our struggle for independence from the Crown. We remember. And thousands of our youth are buried there in recognition of this connection.
I love this comment so much. I love the French and our 1000 year rivalry.
I love how when we put our minds together we achieve astonishing things (the Channel Tunnel, Concorde etc.).
I love how Paris is a second home to Londoners and London is a second home to Parisians.
Yes we are rivals, but we are also allies and always will be.
Wonderful answer. I agree that the British and the French are rival brothers in many ways, who love to hate each other. Interestingly when the Americans get on their usual, “The French are so rude” tirade I have met many British people, who only five minutes earlier, were making fun of the French, who will defend the French. I think most reasonable people in the UK respect France but will make fun of it, with a degree of affection, whereas the Americans often seen to have negative personal feelings without any humour about the French. I have no idea why, as they never would have won their treasured independence without the French.
Damn right too, Only we are allowed to slag off each other, we’ve both earned that right.
For USA to get its independence it took France's bankruptcy, the end of monarchy and the fall of its empire.
Yet most Americans I have met will insist that France played little to no play in the favorable issue of Independence war as the French army was sent at the end of the conflict. France provided about everything for this war, France provided intelligentsia, weapons, global conflict on England to weaken England and make this win possible.
Of course France was serving its own interest by limiting England expansion and power. It is highly likely that if France didn't freed this future ally from England and that England kept this colony then England would have ended having the needed power to finally succeed in conquering France. This war and its issue secured a balance in the world's powers.
USA poorly repaid his ally when time came by refusing to enter the conflict in 1940. And it is not the most problematic part. When they did and succeeded with the allied forces in liberating France they tried to govern France. It took a lot to get US army out of France.
Most Americans seem very unaware of those facts. It is hard not to see some intention to weaken France's influence on the geopolitical scene .
You will often see this question from Americans : did the French ever win a war? Nah the biggest empire of its time (before England out best them) did it without winning any war…
There was indisputable intentions to reduce France to a seducing way of life.
This view of France and the French people would be inconceivable from English people who share common history with us.
You have to remember that Britain did conquer France, twice in quick succession. But it was never about occupying the land or overthrowing the nation or people, it was about the removal of Napoleon. Many in Britain identified with the French people and respected the nation, but disagreed with their leadership, it was the leadership which had to be removed and France had to be relegated to a second tier power to secure The Empire’s future, the revolution was a frightening prospect to the power base in the UK. Britain did not want to see a weak France, simply a controlled one.
Britons were scared of France when she was under militaristic leadership, France was a formidable foe and still is today if anyone is foolish enough to take up arms against them. While some modern day Britons make the occasional rude comment about French cowardice, the majority understand the reality and the value of having France as an ally. When the chips are down ,fighting alongside France is a no brainer and the Americans might do well to remember that you don’t win every battle and war, there is no shame in losing occasionally, its what you do afterwards that counts.
