You can make big money as an electrician or plumber and it’s pretty satisfying.

That's cos the plumber and electrician are unscrupulous in the UK. They overcharge and con people.

This is such a mentally healthy strategy! Weibo is such a self-aware, humble, intelligent and handsome man. In case it doesn't work out with his cleaning career, he can try out being a key opinion leader (Chinese kind of 'content creator', but more than that) or modeling.
I, myself, am half-Asian and have graduated with 2 master degrees and 4 bachelor degrees. I have worked for the world's largest software company and plan on resigning soon to be self-employed. I'm half-European and I live in Europe. Here, there's more work-life balance than in East Asia. But as a self-employed person, I aim to express my own identity, my own business ideas and my own way of human connection more strongly than in the corporate world
There is an oversupply of engineers but the economy can't absorb so many highly skilled workers because economic growth is a gradual process. Combined with a shortage in blue collar workers, it is a good path.
I wish i had the smarts for a white collar job. Trust me, give or take 10 years and you would be complaining how your blue collar job is killing your back or making you ill.
I operate boilers. Worked in refineries/chemical/power plants for over 20 years.
Knee joint pains, a bad back, several injuries (burns, fractures), close calls with death. Beside my health, my finance takes a hit too. I'm consistently earning lower than graduates from the university.
Yeah...I would definitely pick a white collar job. Unfortunately, I'm not academically inclined.
Society now is aggressively promoting the trades and just throwing large numbers of unfilled positions in the trades out of thin air. When you eventually get a large influx of trade workers, wages will get depressed (which is the whole point). Latecomers will be equipped with a niche skillset that pays peanuts.
From a blue collar worker like myself, I would still suggest that people still focus on getting a viable degree, perhaps multi disciplined ones.
I am in my early 20s, didn't work a blue-collar job, and my back hurts anyway.
There is no good option. White collar jobs suck mentally; blue collar jobs suck physically. Choose your poison.
or if you're lucky, you can balance these two, but I think there are not many jobs like this.

People say they are not academically inclined but you would be surprised at how smart you can be especially when you have the appropriate resources available to you. People have the capability and it's really down to either your willingness or find a method that works for you. Since not everyone learns the same way. If you told me numbers I wouldn't be able to do anything in my head, I would visually need to see the numbers and also need room to work out the problem. I remember something about a construction worker or something complaining about how younger people can't read measurements and stuff like that. If you were to tell me the measurements of something verbally I would look at you with a blank stare since I just can't process them either in a blue collar or white collar environment. But it's only when I can visually see the numbers that I understand what you are talking about.
I've had a number of situations in college where I just felt like I was not very smart (and this is me going back to college in my late 20s after having dropped out in my early 20s and doing multiple jobs including agriculture stuff) but I was able to keep pushing along and I've been able to get by.
I remember in a class I took that I was so convinced I was going to fail (it's a math logic class, the type of class that Computer Science and Math majors take) since it can be difficult to understand. I was on the borderline of either passing or failing the class. I even told my instructor if I should drop out of the class, he convinced me to stay in the class. I kept working at it and in the end I got a B in the class. I was convinced I was very dumb and why am I even bothering trying to do with and I was able to do it. I even heard what I can only presume was a woman in her later 30s early 40s also telling one of the tutors that she didn't feel that smart and all of this stuff. I'm not sure if she passed or not but people feel like that at times. So others are out there and sometimes they are able to overcome it and other times it doesn't always work out. If you have the opportunity and are willing, give it a try?

i have a special skill of organizing stuff that i learned from my mother. i capitalize this skill by advertising around people with messy houses (i clean and organize their stuff) and i also provide add-on services like marie kondo does. it does not necessarily require higher order form of thinking, but it pays good money on top of being a professor at a local college.

Blue collar work can sometimes even make you physically stronger and your body more able because it keeps you active. White collar makes you have sedentary lifestyle, weakening your body. White collar work can also impact you psychologically because it can be quite dull and boring. Blue collar work can also sometimes keep your personality more grounded and down to earth. You are not eaten up by greed or work politics.
