China’s economy might be slowing down but for its youth, there’ll always be time for tea. We meet 28-year-old Shanghai resident Tong xiaodai. She loves milk tea so much that she spends up to RMB5000 or US$700 a month on the beverage.
Edit: I get she buys it for her employees but I still stand firm. 3 cups a day is ridiculous.
that can not be healthy. Also thats around the average wage for some people in China - even buying a few coffee's a week here Sydney barely hits 500USD a year. Like most things in life moderation is key and i doubt this showcases the average life of someone in China. Once again the media always showcasing the extreme.
Do not, my friends, become addicted to tea. It will take hold of you, and you will resent its absence!

@richardhe5973 sugarless ..... tea leaves is healthy to drink
It’s not any different from Americans spending on coffee
@organizedchaos4559 700usd of coffee a month? Yeah it is
@andia968 you can do that but it won’t taste good at all. I mean it’s not like they use quality tea or milk. Sometimes when I crave milk tea, I add 30% sugar only (there’s this option thankfully) and I think this year, I only drink like 5 times… I tried to control my sugar intake
@richardhe5973 the addiction is to the sugar......same with any addiction, smokes, gambling, alcohol, etc. manufacturers know just what to exploit
I think maybe half that amount is plausible. My cousin bought me chagee at 4-5 usd a cup without fancy add ons, it comes at 20 usd for 4 cups including delivery. I visited her and instead of asking me which one I wanted she got me 4 different flavors, Chinese people are known for their generosity. It’s a cultural thing.
If you clicked on his video then their headline worked, however ugly and sensationalistic it may be… average people don’t spend that money on take out let alone milk tea. A 700 a year is probably more like it
@Naranjus $4 $5 milk tea is a no for me lol, I’m being a cheapskate here ??. Here the most expensive probably $2 to $2.5 (Indonesia), the cheapest probably $0.8 no add on whatsoever. The last time I was in Shanghai (this year June) , the boba milk tea cost around 20 rmb ($3) at shop close to my house… it was a shocker for me ?? I think it was 10 to 12 rmb at most in 2019…
so what thats make them happy its like alcohol

Title is misleading. 700USD includes business expenses (i.e. office drink like how many companies provide coffee at work). She is a business owner who also buys her employees milk tea. She only drinks up to 3 cups per day for herself.
i thought it was just for her but lol when I saw in the later part that it was full the whole gang
@leexingha Yeah... with drinks for the whole company + for personal and social occasions, 700USD/month is not a lot at all. CNA money/finance content tends to be sensational or out of touch from reality though, so I'm unfortunately not surprised. Sad though, considering their regular reporting tends to be pretty good and thorough.
I like how CNA many times always manage to find the odd ball to do the interview.... RMB5K on milk tea, Ms. Tong will spend an equal amount of diabetic medication soon.
I find it amusing that xiaodai's alternative form of social activity if milk tea is not available is buying her friends a meal.... Maybe she has a generous nature, but for her sake, I hope she can differentiate between friends and friends who are just looking for meal tickets.

Todays milk tea offers not just caffeine, but it can be low or no sugar, vegan, and most likely filling. Due to the tapioca balls it can swell in the body making you want to eat less. Makes sense if you just live off a it but not healthy.
Sorry no such thing as zero sugar. The tapioca balls already soak with brown sugar

In Singapore, I used to take 25% sugar in my milk tea every week, however, my family influenced me to take 0% sugar milk tea. I also take the healthier Konjac jelly rather than tapioca pearls which is easier to digest and i also prefer konjac!
