Hydropower, or hydroelectric power, is a renewable energy source that generates electricity by using the kinetic energy of flowing water:
1. Store water
Water is collected or stored at a higher elevation, such as in a reservoir created by a dam.
2. Release water
The water is released through pipes or tunnels (penstocks) to a lower elevation.
3. Turn a turbine
The falling water pushes against and turns the blades of a turbine.
4. Generate electricity
The turbine turns a metal shaft in an electric generator, which produces electricity.
5. Step up voltage
Transformers convert the alternating voltage to a higher voltage for long-distance transmission.
6. Feed into the grid
The electricity is fed into the electrical grid to power homes, businesses, and industries.
The amount of electricity a hydropower plant can produce depends on:
Water flow: The greater the water flow, the more electricity the plant can produce.
Head: The change in elevation, or fall, from one point to another. The higher the head, the more electricity the plant can produce.
What is a hydroelectric power plant, and how does it work ...
Hydropower is the largest and cheapest renewable electricity source globally. It generates about 15% of global electricity and provides at least 50% of the total electricity supply for more than 35 countries.
