What is your favorite thing about the US culture?
I LOVE this question. It’s easy to be down on the US, especially when I put on my cynical, rolling-my-eyes-at-the-world, aloof, liberal hat. But the truth is that I moved here for a reason and I consider myself very fortunate for that. This is a really fantastic place to live.
Today, I am a physician. Stories like mine happen every day in this country. It is not because the US tends to attract a more hardworking and determined set of immigrants. Rather, there are formal and informal built-in mechanisms that enable success where it would be more reasonable to expect failures:
The good samaritanism: I am almost in tears when I recall how many people were willing to go to enormous lengths to help me when I was basically a stranger to them: the teachers who gave me clothes when they saw me wearing the same stuff day after day, those who paid me to grade papers, not because they needed my help, but because they wanted to give me a source of income, those who pushed me into higher-level classes and paid for me AP exams (including Dave Consiglio, who is now one of my very best friends), the professors who arranged for me to be seen by psychologists when it was clear that I was depressed, the counselors who bent over backwards to help me find scholarships because they believed in me… none of these people had to care. They had their own families and their own issues. But they cared enough to try and help me because I had nothing.

Self-criticism and reflection: it usually takes a while before wrongs are righted but there is a remarkable amount of introspection and self-criticism, at least from certain segments of American society. This is really healthy because it allows this country to (hopefully) learn from its past mistakes - what society is free from them? - and become a more just society over time: this is why women, gays, and minorities enjoy more rights today than they ever have in the past, though progress remains to be made.

Excellent answer, bookmarked! One of the greatest gifts that immigrants bring to this country: perspective so that those of us born here can see not only what’s wrong with our country, but what’s right about it as well.

Thank you for this answer. As you allude to, there’s a lot of problematic aspects of the US. But one of the most positive aspects is the virtuous cycle of refugees and immigrants coming here, making a good thing of their lives, and paying it forward.
What a wonderful answer. Exactly my thoughts. Thousands of people come her fulfill their American dream but hardly anyone shows such genuine gratitude. My experience is not exactly like your but I can agree with you about generous and just people of America. They treat foreigner very well. To tell you the truth, I was never treated this well in the country of my birth. Teachers mocked me, students humiliated me because I belonged to low caste. According to them I was born to clean and sweep for them. although I have to say the University I went to in India, they treated me with respect. The people in America treated me with dignity and respect. Like you I cannot thank enough for my professors, the free libraries and unlimited access to internet. I am aware of few issues still needed to be fixed but hey lot of it is already great. God bless America.
Precisely why, despite getting a recent pay cut, I’m still working at USCIS instead of looking for a more lucrative gig (which I’ve had a few offers for already). I love my job helping immigration to be more accessible. I got our agency reopened after only 2 weeks of lockdown by implementing a remote interview process using existing equipment in the field. SUCH a great job.
As an immigrant myself, I wholeheartedly concur with your answer. If I may add an extra point or two: I work in biotechnology, with a very educated workforce of people from all over the world. There’s no “nationalistic clique” where only US-born, or culturally American folks, are favored. It’s the most meritocratic system I’ve ever seen. My colleagues, many whom have worked in Europe and Asia, will attest to the difficulties of vertical mobility elsewhere, despite being the most distinguished, experienced and educated experts in their fields. I truly believe this is one of the reasons US technology companies are so successful.

It's refreshing to read an answer like this, it seems like everything on the internet written about the US is only negative.
You, my friend, are the gift that America receives. We are happy that you are happy, and that you are here, and we definitely are better off for your talent and hard work.
Thank you.

The most impressive detail of your story is that you went from speaking no English to using the word “internecine”.
Every Christmas my office organizes a gift-buying program for recent immigrants of limited income. I love buying gifts for kids like The Minions Fart Gun, as I know they will love it until they break it, but later on they will have a more optimistic and assertive position on life to get a gift from a stranger. I know they will never forget it.
I disagree with so much of what you write, so as an American, who works hard for myself and others every day, I’m glad you generously give us credit for which we are deserving. I’m happy for your success here. That’s what we are about. However, you you you are as much a part of the equation of success. Your success. I feel like The US gets a lot of shade for the failures. The infrastructure for success is here. But at the end of the day, there needs to be a willing participant. Congratulations to you and thanks again.

Nice to hear positive stories of the US from successful, hardworking immigrants like yourself Habib! Us native-born Americans need to hear stories like yours more often so we’re more appreciative of the opportunities and freedoms that we have.
Those of us on the liberal part of the scale tend to concentrate on the things that are wrong with the United States, since those are the things that need to change, but as an American I have never thought that anything was impossible, that there was nothing we could not do if we only had the will.

Not to deviate from the very worthy topic at hand, but I want to thank you for this line. As a devout Independent/centrist, in recent years, I have found myself leaning more and more conservative.

You are most welcome! Liberals of my generation (the same as Obama’s) remember the Cold War and our grandparents remember World War II. We appreciate the country and know how close we came to losing it. And we are still in love with the “separation of powers” and the “checks and balances” and the chaotic beauty of the democratic system.

A wonderful answer.
As a non-US person it's great to read positive things about the States, as opposed to all the US-bashing which is prent.
All countries need to be held to account, of course, but positives rather than just negatives make a refreshing read.
Cheers, Habib!

Habib, brilliantly said. As an immigrant to the US, that is what I have noted. This is the only country in the world where an immigrant can become highly successful and rich and accepted.
