Yesterday was a good day.
Yesterday was also the birthday of Comrade M Zedong, the great leader of the Chinese people.
Yesterday marked the first flight in human history of two sixth-generation aircraft, one made in China and the other also made in China.
The Chengdu Aircraft Industry Group in South China and the Shenyang Aircraft Industry Group in North China both made their first flights of new sixth-generation fighters.
In traditional thinking, it seems like two designs are competing for a bid, but based on current information, the sixth-generation fighters of the Chengdu Aircraft Industry Group and the Shenyang Aircraft Industry Group are very different in size. It is very likely that they are not competing for a bid, but two different types of sixth-generation fighters that have been determined.
The sixth-generation fighter that the Chengdu Aircraft Industry Group made its first flight has been confirmed to be a three-engine configuration, much larger than the heavy fighter J-20, with a larger payload, suitable for long-range penetration and strikes on enemy ground and sea targets.
Although the Shenyang Aircraft Industry Group's sixth-generation fighter is larger than the accompanying J-11 series fighters, it is smaller in size than the Chengdu Aircraft Industry Group's sixth-generation fighter, and it is even likely to be a twin-engine fighter. This sixth-generation fighter emphasizes air maneuverability and is more suitable for air superiority operations. It is very likely to be the next generation of air superiority fighters sexted by the Navy and Air Force, and the size is also more conducive to being on an aircraft carrier when folded.
China is currently the first country in the world to test-fly sixth-generation fighter jets.

In fact, when the Pakistan Air Force was about to be equipped with China's second fifth-generation stealth fighter J-35A, I guessed that China's sixth-generation stealth fighter would be released.
Regardless of the focus, the two sixth-generation fighters that China first flew have made breakthroughs in aviation technology and are significantly ahead of other fighters in the world in terms of technology, and they definitely have generational standards.
This time, China's aviation industry is no longer a follower, but a definer of standards. This day is of epoch-making significance.
In 2019, the Americans said they would test various sixth-generation aircraft within five years.
At the end of 2024, the five-year deadline has expired. The US plan cannot keep up with the changes and the progress is not as good as China.
Come on, Uncle Sam!

If the research papers published by Shenyang (the manufacturer of the second plane) are true, the back fins can move from the flat stealthy configuration to a F-117 like tail configuration for better manoeuvrability.
Todd R Harry
Interesting the color configuration on the plane. If China's remained with its previous operating policies, most of the public has missed the development of this bomber.
My assumption would be it underwent extensive testing in the desert regions in the north.
I wonder if M would appreciate the barren regions of China becoming integral to its future. I suspect he would have had some interesting thoughts on that.
Todd R Harry
Maybe.
Then again, Russia believed it's top tier technology would compensate for a shit military, piss training, and oligarchs owning 90% of its funding.
Turns out all the technology in the world can't compensate for the people behind it.
Will China fall into the same trap? Only time will tell.

Indeed, what a remarkable achievement! Timed to perfection. Two 6th Gen fighter aircrafts flew for the first time in human history. That too 2 aircrafts of two different designs. I don't think anyone, any nation, will be able to beat this record. Not for the 7th, 8th or 8th gen.

Avionics and stealth capabilities.
It's not a hard fast line, but more a general assumption. America, China, Europe and Russia generally considered any military aircraft built from the early 2000s onward to be in the 6th generation territory.
And already, there's discussion on what will constitute a 7th generation fighter.

Also structural changes like the lack of vertical stabilisers, which improves stealth performance but which require significantly more sophisticated fly by wire.
Likely also include in the definition native support for drone wingman operations. The J20S variant already has a second pilot for drone control, but this is a post-launch modification.
Todd R Harry
Maybe?
I'm NOT convinced China's going the “Elon Musk” route here. Generally, whats confused outside observers is the inability to accept, less understand, that China simply sees problems, and solutions, differently from the West.
I DO think that's what we are seeing here- China went “stealthy” without the full “stealth” and solved it's perceived issue. Will part of that involve drones?
Lù Shèng An 陸盛安
I think it's pretty inevitable, and not because China is taking cues from Musk. After all, they stretched the J20 expressly to accommodate a drone operator. And other initiatives like the world's first dedicated UAV aircraft carrier launched in 2022, and the “Jetank” drone drone carrier displayed in Zhuhai 2024 clearly shows the PLA has been thinking about this a long time.
Equally, it's also hard to imagine that when the USAF finally gets it's act together and finishes revising the specs for the NGAD, that they will leave out drone control (with a second pilot?). So, native integration with drone wingmen is practically a de facto given for 6th Gen status.
Todd R Harry
And, I think you make a solid argument.
That said, I'm also naturallY LEEry of the whole “drone everything” drive. Now admittedly, I might be on the wrong side of history here, but I think humans still have far to go in war.
I do think that part of it is the PRC is doing a lot more f what they're good at: throw everything at the wall, see what sticks. You saw that with their early 2000s naval builds- almost a dozen different designs, engines, power grids, radar builds and even crewing all leading to the the Luyang III/ Renhai ships, plus thier secret weapon - the Jiangdao FFG.
I don't think they'll keep all the designs we've seen previewed, or even the ideas, but that's currently China's biggest advantage: the willingness to fail, and either learn from or disregard the idea. That's opposed to where my country is, where failure usually just means throwing more money at it!
