"RUSSIA Su-57" no contest, no-brainer. Buying US 5th Gen fighter will be like - "bought by India but co-own with US". US will put so many conditions on India on how the fighter jet can be or cannot be use. As for Russia, they don't care.. Once the purchased is done, India can use whenever and wherever it wants.

India doesn't have a vow to buy only soviet/Russian jets. Prior to going that route all aircraft were bought from UK and France.
Historically India was pushed into that corner by the USA only.
If we buy F35, we need permission from the US to use them in war. Russia will not have such conditions, even if the Su-57 is worse than the F35. France is very reliable, but they don't have a fifth generation fighter yet.

@ Surely there will be pressure. Trump has already said India should buy more weapons from the USA. I read sometime back very attractive terms were offered if 115 F21s (latest block F16 with some heavy make-up!) were chosen, including shifting of production line and MRO to India because Lockheed wants to close the production in USA. If that is true, India should go for it and leave the F35 alone. I don't think we can afford to own and operate a sizeable fleet of them. Even though our loving neighbor operates older F16s and knows all about them. I would love to see their face if they have to approach India for MRO/spares at some point in the future!
