Parking minimums are city laws which force businesses, offices, and homes to build a certain number of parking spaces for something like every 100 sq ft or one bedroom. If the free market desired more car parking, there wouldn't need to be laws which mandate them. Same thing with suburban sprawl. Cities have development laws that ban every type of development pattern except suburban sprawl. It's not the people's preferences, necessarily, it's the law. It's way past time to get rid of these laws and let people choose the way they wish to live.

Honestly, after living abroad for two years in an area with incredibly efficient, safe, affordable public transportation, I’ve been making an escape plan to leave the US again. People in the US scream freedom!!!!!! But there is nothing more free than not having a car payment and getting where I need to go by foot/public transit. I could even get to small seaside villages for $2.00 on the bus. Freedom is a joke in America because we all are forced into debt just like being forced to get a car loan, insurance, maintenance, gas, etc just to literally survive here. $12,000 a year of car ownership is 1/3 to 1/2 of many people's entire paychecks. It's all so rigged in favor of big banks and corporations here in the US with no thought to the best policies for its citizens.

I feel like there are forces in the United States that are making sure that the public is constantly spending their money on some kind of expenses like driving a car and living in a house that won't last a lifetime. Right now, the public is constantly being encouraged to sign up for all kinds of subscxtions. They are selling all kinds of products that you can't use until you connect them to some kind of online subscxtion service.

I actually just ordered an E bike last night because I had a realization that the small town that I live in is about 2 miles long by 2 miles wide. Why should I use a car to get around in the town? Of course, the closest big town is still 30 miles away, so it's not totally replacing a car, but it's something!

So unless you can cough up so much money for rent or to buy, you are just going to end up living further away as the price becomes affordable to you. Driving is usually the slowest door to door transport option in London. Traffic is slow and parking hard to find. Can not compete with Bus/Tube/Trains or bikes for time. It's only for lager shopping trips or weekends out of London cars are used for. I use mine 3 or 4 times a month. I live in NYC, I have never owned a car (I saved tons of money and time), I ride a Citi bike everywhere and occasionally ride the subway or bus. If I ever move somewhere else in the United States I will specifically look into places with reliable public transit and separated bike lines. I lived car-free in LA for two years. It was challenging but possible. If I was able to do it in LA I definitely can live car free in Phila, Chicago, Boston, SF, maybe Seattle and Minneapolis.

However, within 1 mile of my house (about 5 mins on a bike) there are multiple strip malls with restaurants, grocery, a water park, schools, and many other amenities. This area could and should function as a village center and should be pleasant and inviting for people to walk or bike to. Instead, the design makes no effort to be anything other than highways, parking lots and strip malls. This is bad planning that has a negative effect on quality of life. The incremental cost of these areas being connected with bike paths and pedestrian friendly modifications is very small compared to what could be gained in value, economic activity, and again quality of life if we had options! Instead, everyone drives. Biking and walking is something you pay thousands of dollars to do on vacation!

Its interesting reading the comments on these videos because there's always a population of people that get offended by the video and think its a personal attack if they perfer driving. For the most part we can agree that driving is the predominant mode of transportation in the USA. There are a certain population that can't drive, own a car or want to reduce the miles they drive. Just having that option is what people desire. If you want to drive you can drive. That isnt going anywhere especially in the USA.

There are so many reasons we should be making our cities more bikable and encouraging more people to use public transit. Congestion pricing, like they recently enacted in New York City, is a start, but we should also do zoning reform to allow for higher density, mixed use, walkable neighborhoods.

I've never been mugged by a fellow passenger in my own car. No one has ever shot heroin or overdosed in my car. Homeless people have never peed on the floor of my car while I'm driving to work. Etc. I love taking public transport in Asia, where it's clean and safe. Every time I have to use it in America, I regret it. It's an awful experience. Maybe fix that before chastising people for wanting to avoid it.

Europe is very condensed and most countires in there are very small hance why it's much easier to make public trans and everything is much closer. US is huge compared to European countries and everything is more spread out. Walking friendly cities will still take you forever to get somewhere because again everything is more spread out. What we really need is high speed rail infrastructure the likes of Japan, but because of so many people have ownership of the land and don't want to give it up makes this project very challenging because lots of rail lines would have to go through private lands etc...including other reasons

To be fair, America is huge; this country is the larger than many European countries combined. Many neighborhoods are relatively far away from work places (unless its a huge city or a small town). Having to travel a distance thatd take 30 minutes by car is saving more time than other such modes of transportation. We also have really weird weather; we can experience extreme heats and deadly colds. In short, there are a lot of reasons we drive a lot and given that the price of gas is unstable, just driving for fun isnt the only reason we do it.

I am a car enthusiast but I think America only likes designing cities for cars, not people. My school is relatively close to me but I still can't walk or bike to school because the sidewalk can randomly end and the city is terrible at designing bike lanes. I hate that when you mention "bike lane" to an older person they will immediately think its a bad idea.
