A landmark deal clinched between the UK and EU to remove checks on food exports will add £9bn to the UK economy and lower food prices, No 10 has said, as the last-minute agreement was secured early on Monday morning.

Keir Starmer said the deal, billed as a “historic” turning of the page, delivered the “reset” he had promised after winning the general election last July.
It will grant EU fishers access to British waters for an additional 12 years and pave the way for the removal of checks on British food exports, allowing everything from the “great British burger to shellfish” to be sold again with ease in the EU, Starmer said.

The deal also holds out hope for a return of the UK to the Erasmus university exchange programme, and the creation of a youth mobility scheme that would allow young people to experience the EU through work, study, au pairing or travel.

The UK said the deal would make “food cheaper, slash red tape, open up access to the EU market”. But the trade-off for the deal was fishing access and rights for an additional 12 years – more than the UK had offered – which is likely to lead to cries of betrayal from the industry.

The two sides will begin talks on the “youth experience scheme”, first reported in the Guardian, which could mirror existing schemes the UK has with countries such as Australia and New Zealand.

The UK said it would be “capped and time-limited”, though there is no agreement yet from the EU on the details.

Central to the agreement is the new agrifoods deal, known as an SPS agreement, which removes red tape on food and drink exports, removing some routine checks on animal and plant products completely. In return, the UK will accept some dynamic alignment on EU food standards and a role for the European court of justice in policing the deal.

It better work on food, I've seen some fresh meat items jumping up by over £1 in a week each at our local. We've seen the steady increase on food shops for a while now, but nothing quite that drastic in the span of 7 days.
I know the "but historically our grocceries are cheaper" hammer comes out to bludgeon such thinking lately, but that ignores the context of what we pay in other bills VS europe: Almost double in some cases.

Transporting anything in large quantities is cheaper by ship than by lorry. Container ships are the reason bananas are cheaper than apples basically.
Our groceries are cheaper. Not only than the rest of Europe but even by world standards, as a proportion of our wages of course. So I’ll bet those fresh meat items have gone up by the same amount elsewhere too.
Or that it’s any help of course and it doesn’t change the situation that prices are going up much more than we’d like.

As with anything, if prices go up and people pay it, they stay up regardless of the actual cost of the product, they simply pocket the increased profit margins. I hope it will at least slow further increases and give some pricing stability. But I doubt even that much.
The “groceries are cheaper” people are absolutely braindead. In the past three years every single item I regularly buy went up by 10-25% percent.
None of this will be enough for the anti EU/ right wingers. Starmer could add 50 billion to our economy, and he'd still be labelled as a traitor. People saying he's betrayed brexit is ridiculous nonsense.
I for one am looking forwards to once again having all aspects of our lives governed by our EU overlords
Seriously though, well done Starmer and the Government for negotiating what looks to be a sensible agreement which will benefit both sides, rather than a pyrrhic victory for the Brexiteers.

Brexshite was the most stupidest idea that was ever seen in modern times. It ruined the Uk. Without brexshite we would have never had Rusia invade Ukraine Putin realised it is his time to act while Europe powers we’re fighting each other.
I'll find it funny that once we left the EU, Farming struggled because it severely reduced export options while shops and bakeries were still importing EU goods while farmers voted for it thinking it'd let them strong arm supermarkets into paying whatever they wanted, and now they're tryna say Starmer has betayed farming like this doesn't stop the slow bleeding of the farming industry by making it easier to export again.

I know they said that they are continuing talks currently, but if we can get mutual recognition mutually between countries on qualifications, this will be really helpful if anyone wants to work within the EU
Recently they have been saying everything will get cheaper but prices have been going up. I'm in manufacturing all our ingredients cost have doubled. This deal won't change this. Most of our food is imported I don't think shop will reduce prices.
Somebody make a note of food prices so we can compare. I suspect it will make it cheaper for supermarkets to import but we'll not see much of the benefit.
Might make the government money but cheaper food will just be an added profit for the supermarkets I don't expect anything to get Cheaper it never does
I can wholeheartedly guarantee you now food prices will not go down what so ever. It may make it cheaper for the corporations but those savings will not be given to us mere peasants. They have record breaking profit margins to beat this year remember.
Will it though? The food companies aren't going to suddenly reduce, they will just bank the benefits as profits and bonus, and give it back to shareholders and CEO's pay rises.
Yea, it’ll make some uk exported food cheaper for people in the EU, it’ll make no difference to the price of food we import.
