During the 12 months leading up to March, more than 6,000 US citizens have applied to either become British subjects or to live and work in the country indefinitely – the highest number since comparable records began in 2004, according to data released on Thursday by the UK’s Home Office.

Over the period, 6,618 Americans applied for British citizenship – with more than 1,900 of the applications received between January and March, most of which has been during the beginning of Donald Trump’s second US presidency.

The figures come as British authorities under a Labour government are trying to reduce immigration to the UK, with Britain’s prime minister, Keir Starmer, vowing to take “back control of our borders” and warning that uncontrolled immigration could result in the country “becoming an island of strangers, not a nation that walks forward together”.

UK figures show net migration dropped by almost half in 2024 – to 431,000 – compared with 2023.

The surge in US applications for UK residency comes as American immigration lawyers say they are receiving an increasing number of inquiries. Some are pointing to the polarized political climate in the Trump-led country, which itself is mounting an aggressive immigration-related crackdown.

Muhunthan Paramesvaran, an immigration lawyer at Wilsons Solicitors in London, told the New York Times that inquiries had risen “in the immediate aftermath of the election and the various pronouncements that were made”.

“There’s definitely been an uptick in inquiries from US nationals,” Paramesvaran told the outlet. “People who were already here may have been thinking: ‘I want the option of dual citizenship in the event that I don’t want to go back to the US.’”

Zeena Luchowa, a partner at Laura Devine Immigration, which specializes in US migration to the UK, was more explicit in pointing to the “political landscape” amid Trump’s government. Luchowa told the outlet that the rise was not limited to US nationals – but also other nationalities living there.

“The queries we’re seeing are not necessarily about British citizenship – it’s more about seeking to relocate,” Luchowa said to the Times.

However, the increase in US applications to the UK may not necessarily reflect political conditions in either country. Of the 5,521 settlement applications from US citizens last year, most were from people who were eligible via spousal or family lixs.

Paramesvaran said such applications were likely to climb because the UK government had extended the qualification period from five years to 10 before they could apply for settlement. But Labour government politicians have hinted that some applicants may be able to skirt those requirements.

That echoes one aspect of Trump’s thinking in the US, where he has floated the idea of an immigration “gold card” – in essence, an extension of the EB-5 program that extends green cards to foreign investors and their families.

The UK home secretary, Yvette Cooper, told parliament earlier in May that “there will be provisions to qualify more swiftly that take account of the contribution people have made” and said the British government “will introduce new, higher language requirements” because “the ability to speak English is integral to everyone’s ability to contribute and integrate”.

I'm genuinely kinda shocked more countries aren't trying to capitalize on America destroying its scientific institutions. It'd be pretty easy right now to poach our best and brightest minds for their gain
UK Universities are in crisis mode. Most are cutting programs and laying off staff. They're definitely not trying to recruit American academics, especially given that academic salaries in the UK are about half of what they are in the US.
The article says that most of the interest is from people who already live in the UK but never bothered applying for citizenship or people who live in the US, but have a British spouse or other qualifying family member
Salaries are half but the dissident prison terms are 100% less
Sure, from an American's pov it may be worth it, but at a time when many British universities are are on the edge of financial insolvency, it doesn't make sense from the university's side to actively recruit people used to bigger salaries (who may be more aggressive in salary negotiations or pester you for raises down the line), who will also need visa sponsorship (expensive), and may want help with relocation costs
I think China just made an offer to all those foreign Harvard students.
Yeah, and a bunch of them don’t even need to offer big salaries. Just a visa and a place to keep working without the circus.
These are Harvard students, they can pretty much go wherever they want to. Chinese Universities are going to have to sweeten the deal if they want people to choose them over any of the more prestigious options in Europe that they won't struggle for offers from.
Does China have a Harvard equivalent?
The two big state flagships are Tsinghua Uni and Peking Uni. For Chinese citizens, you have to be in the 0.1% of national test scores to get in, but for foreigners it's much easier since china had been trying to project their soft power. Chinese citizens hold it in super high regard, but outside of asia they are not as quite known.
China just offered schooling to literally all american international students set to be displaced by trumps illegal revocation.
China's been positioning itself to move into high skill service based while offshoring manufacturing to africa basically developing africa into a new china and we just made it easier for them. Truly a master play by the Trump admins economic war with asia (and I guess the rest of the world too)
No one but Chinese speaking people are going to change from one authoritarian regime to another. as much as it will fucking suck for poor people here under trump, those with heaps of qualifications will probably be served better battening down the hatches and hoping that a blue wave will happen next year and undo some of the damage Trump has done.
Or maybe international students who are currently being booted or now aware that they might be booted from our top universities.
Chinese unis also often have english instructed courses at their top universities so that isn't even a limiting factor. People in the day to day might care about authoritarianism but they care way the hell more about stability and china seems to offer that. I'm not talking about clint from ohio going to china I'm talking about Ajay from india, or someone from japan, or someone from a whole host of other countries choosing to go to university in china next year or they year after because their friend or someone they know about almost had to drop out and pack their shit at the drop of a hat. And might still have to depending on how things play out. Then when they're in the professional world they don't have social or networking ties to or experience with silicon valley or Boston or New York like they would have, they have them to Beijing or Shanghai. And there's one less thread in the fabric tying America and the rest of the world together.
As far as trade goes... they already are. Every country already trades with china. china is looking to reconfigure their economy in the same way the US has done since the early 20th century, meaning there's going to be opportunities for expanding that relationship, and the US has become a costly and unpredictable entity. Regardless of who's elected next that ship has sailed; we got a mulligan the first time and then we did it again. China is authoritarian, but it is not unpredictable.

The irony of voluntarily swapping places with China with the US becoming the polluting sweatshop of the world while all the cutting edge multinationals move their R&D to China.

never said it was.

It's complicated. Americans definitely would like to move to Europe and UK, language barrier obviously easier in UK, but Americans who hold good jobs here want to be sure they'll be compensated similar in Europe and UK (and wages here are way higher).
That and a lot of States are holding firm against the current administration. It's definitely bad in the US right now but the news has also blown things up to be 10x worse than it really is.
And likewise, the news Americans get about Europe and the UK gets blown up 10x out of proportion too. We get constant news of waves of crimes in Europe and daily stabbings etc, and a move to far right politics etc. I as a UK born citizen who emigrated to the US can't really tell what is the truth or not based on global news we are hearing.
If money were not option, I would love to move back to UK for family and friend reasons, but I also live in a State which is fighting back hard against the current administration and for now don't see a reason to run (but am keeping options open, because I'm still doing way better than I would if I were in the UK)
I have UK citizenship, so that's an option for me...but it's not that simple to just pack your entire life up, lose your home and job, thousands of things you have to deal with...but on the other hand, by the time it becomes super worth it to leave, maybe you can't hesitate anymore.

As an American, I've thought about this long and hard. From the time I was in my teens, I yearned to live in the UK. I tried to when I was in my 20s and just didn't have the money. Now, I'm old. Any money I have comes from American Social Security, which discontinues if you live outside the US for any length of time. I have four cats that probably couldn't survive quarantine. So I know, I'm here in the US to stay. It's my home. And I have to make it better any way I can.
