I’ve had a few different responses.

First time I resigned it was from my first job at Dollar General. I gave verbal and written notice at the same time. That was pretty much it.

I resigned from McDonalds and a local motel on the same day a couple months later when I accepted an offer at a warehouse. She said, “We won’t talk about you yet.

The motel was pretty hilarious. The manager seemed like he was looking for a way to get me to stay until he heard the maintenance guy at which time he backed off.

I left the warehouse to start a three month training for a certification. My manager came over at the end of my last day to ask me about the possibility of me coming back afterwards. We agreed that we would have to talk in 3 months.

The 3 months ended up turning into a full year that turned my career in a whole new direction.

I did another round at McDonald’s during the transition for about 3.5 months. When I presented my notice of resignation, the manager literally started cussing. Not at me but at the thought of losing me.

I worked for my last employer for 22 years. The first 5 years was as a field inspector and tester for construction. The next 17 years was as a department manager. My role in the company was very demanding. I managed the projects, managed the soils lab, managed the materials lab, managed the field technicians, I was the radiation safety officer and I was the quality control and technical manager.

He went into a speech about how he thought the position I was in, one I have held for 17 years, may not be suited for me. He stated he had given thought to letting me go but did not want to do that, but he needed to know I was up to the task.

At first I was extremely worried that my job was in jeopardy, so I immediately went to putting together a resume and posted it on a popular job search site. However, as the days, then weeks passed, I realized that what had happened was my manager was trying to motivate me to be better with handling handling difficult employees. I still did not like that he had threatened my job, but understood where he was coming from. I did point out to him that there are many times employees are not going to like what they are asked to do, but that I never bark out orders or give ultimatums, or anything of the like. I always treat them with respect and understand their needs.

Well a few months later I get an email from another company that is looking for a project manager. I respond to their email and liked what they had to say, so I went for an interview. I found I would be strictly a project manager of about 20 public sector projects. All other responsibilities I noted about would not be my responsibility any longer. The next day they make me an offer of 8k above what I was making. After wrestling with the decision over the weekend, I draft a resignation letter.

That Monday I go into his office, shut his door and tell him of the offer I have received and that I am prepared to take the offer but out of loyalty I wanted to give them an opportunity to keep me. After some discussions about duties and position, they offer me only 5k above what I was then making. I agreed to stay, as I thought what’s 3k compared to not having insurance for the next 2 months at a new company and getting to know their procedures and processes.

The story did not end there. A couple of weeks later I get a call from the regional director of the other company. He asks me to have lunch with him, and after a few minutes of discussion on the phone I agree to meet him. At lunch he tells me outright that people of my experience are very hard to come by in our business, actually kind of rare. He states most project managers are people who have not actually had the level of field experience that I had or the longevity in the business. He basically lets me know my skills are very much needed across the industry.

I walked away from that lunch meeting with a new sense of my worth in the industry, which can be hard to gauge when you work for a single company for 22 years. I was also offered 13K over my previous salary (8K over my improved salary) + 1.5K signing bonus + 10.5% yearly bonus. It was a done deal, but I waited until the following Monday to give them my answer.

It was at that moment that I believe my manager realized what was going to be before him. We spent the next 2 hours discussing all the tasks that would need to be transferred to others and what they entailed.

I’m not certain, as he never actually stated it, but I believe after that long discussion in his office he realized the full gravity of everything I was responsible for. I realized he would be at a deficit when I left, as no one knew how to fully run the software we used to run the department. No one ever had the time to try and learn, which I had warned them about years ago. I spent the my last 2 weeks showing several people all of what I do and how to do it in the short time I had left there. I also was part of 2 interviews for my replacement, unfortunately neither one was a viable candidate. As far as I know they still have not found a new department manager.

I think out of all the jobs I have left this was the nicest one. On the last day I had to sign the papers and show someone how to lock me out of the system and told the security guard who I had known a few years that he had to walk me out of the building and take my ID. He didn't like the idea of frog marching me out the door but we worked it out so it was all on camera and he could be seen doing his job.

She congratulated me on the offer I’d received and asked if my current firm could have some time to prepare a counter offer, which I agreed to.

Which seemed odd to me at the time, being that just the week before he had told me that “If you think you can find a better job, you should look around.” I had gone to him asking for a raise when I found out the new guy I was training was making more money than me.

I knew I was doomed when I heard the company president laugh when he realised it.

Funny thing - I’ve tried to quit my current job 3 times now.

I was working as a software programmer at a bank.

I was seriously underpaid for the work I was doing, so when I was offered a position with a consultancy for almost double the salary plus a company car, I bit their hand off.

When I was in high school I worked part time in a unx job for a major grocery store chain. I made very good money for a high school kid, but my boss was very difficult. Today, it would be called a hostile work environment. To get a schedule more conducive to my personal life, work and school, I accepted a position in another field making far less that my unx job at the grocery store.

I noticed that the car stopped in the opposite “through lane” was my former boss from the grocery store. I didn't think much of it until the light changed for us to make the turn. My former boss ran the red light and almost collided with us! He saw us move and thought he had a green light. My FTO pulled him over to write him a summons. I told my FTO ‘I got this, I know the guy.’ The look on his face was priceless! Karma! His paper work checked out so I calmly admonished him to be more careful and gave him a warning. I was not going to lower myself to his level. I am better than that!

Mallory
I was recently passed up for a promotion (January 2021) for a 6% raise. Had my annual uation and was told I would get a 2% raise. I started looking for a job because it is only so long you can be passed up for a promotion and survive off of 2% raises.

I took a lot of time off to paint my house and just do some well deserved time off from 2020 (and interviews, lots of interviews). Finally in April 2021 I was given a job offer while I was in vacation and I was ready to give in my notice.

Many years ago I worked for an investment bank in New York. I had been away from home and my family for about a decade and was ready to head back as my parents were getting older and I wanted to be closer to help them. I found a job in a city a few hours away and requested a meeting with my boss.

Many years ago I was the IT manager and top programmer for a mid-sized company. My boss hired a junior vice president and demoted me. He listened to the song and dance “junior” spouted. When I say “junior” in quotes, he was fresh out of college with a telecommunications degree. This was at the end of a Friday.

Then proceeded to tell me what the emergency was for the weekend. Something about missing $2.5 million on a report used for bonuses. I told my programmer which program to print out and bring it to me. He did within about ten minutes.

The last time this happened was several years ago. It was what one might call an amicable divorce.

I asked him for a few minutes to talk behind closed doors, told him I had accepted another position but was giving him two week’s notice. Then I handed him the signed letter of resignation.
